the short version

Shruti is a Chrome extension that reads Nepali web pages aloud. It has no server. It does not collect, transmit, sell or share any information about you or about what you read. The speech you hear is generated on your own computer by a model that ships inside the extension, and it works with the network switched off.

what the extension reads

To read a page aloud, the extension has to read that page's text. It does this in your browser, in the tab you asked it to read. The text is turned into speech on your machine and then discarded. It is never sent anywhere and it is not written to disk.

It can only do this on:

the Nepali news sites listed in its manifest, where it runs automatically; and
any other page, only after you press its toolbar button or use its right-click menu on that page, which grants access to that one tab for that one action.

what the extension stores

Two things, both in your browser's own extension storage, neither of which leaves your device.

Your settings	Voice, reading style, speed, whether to highlight words, whether to follow the reading with the scroll, whether to announce state changes, whether to hide adverts in reader view, and whether to open articles in reader view automatically. These sync through your Chrome profile if you have Chrome sync enabled, in the same way your bookmarks do.
One number	How long your computer takes to synthesise speech, per unit of text. It is used to decide how much text to render at a time so that reading does not stall. It says nothing about you or about what you read.

While a tab is open, the extension also remembers in session storage which article URLs it has already opened in reader view in that tab, so that pressing Back does not immediately send you back to reader view. That is discarded when the tab closes.

network requests

The extension makes no network requests of its own, with one exception: if you ask it to read a PDF that is open in another tab, it fetches that PDF from the address you pointed it at, after Chrome has asked you for permission to access that site. The file is parsed in your browser and is not uploaded.

third parties

There are none. No analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting, no advertising, and no fonts or scripts loaded from anywhere else.

children

The extension is not directed at children and collects nothing from anyone.

changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and the change appears alongside the extension's Chrome Web Store listing.
